Procida

Procida

A brief guide to Procida explaining what you can find when you visit, how to get around, the size, population and culture of the island.

The island of Procida forms part of a group known as the Flegrean Islands along with its larger neighbour Ischia, the nature reserve island of Vivara to which Procida is attached by a bridge, Nisida and also Capri which is sometimes considered within the same group.

Procida, along with its neighbouring islands is located in the Gulf of Naples and can be reached by either ferry or hydrofoil from Naples city centre or from the port of Pozzuoli which is to the west of Naples and slightly closer to Procida.

Measuring around 4km², Procida is relatively small but has a population of just over 10,000 making it quite densely populated. It's possible to walk from one end of the island to the other in about an hour while a bus, car or scooter over the same distance takes roughly 15 minutes.
Some of the main features of Procida include the pretty marinas of Marina Corricella and Marina Grande along with the fascinating old town known as Terra Murata. The island is also popular with tourists attracted to its sandy beaches and laid-back charm.

There are around 30 Procida hotels to choose from along with a selection of bed and breakfasts and self catering apartments.

Procida leapt to fame when it was used as the setting for the classic "Il Postino" starring Massimo Troisi. As you move around the island you'll find many references to the movie with restaurants, squares and hotels named after either the movie itself or the actors involved.

The most important event on the island takes place every Good Friday. The Processione dei Misteri is a spectacular Easter parade which draws visitors from across the region and from abroad. Locals decked out in costumes carry statues of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, signalling the beginning of the Easter festivities on the island.

Is there anything you'd like to know about Procida?  If you'd like our opinion about a hotel, bed and breakfast, apartment, villa or even a restaurant, drop us a line at info@procidareview.com and we'll be happy to help.
